Silicon Valley battery firm snaps up Northvolt's Polish plant

Who will buy Swedish battery firm Northvolt? It's a question on many people's lips since the company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

As Impact Loop revealed in April, mobility heavyweight Scania has already snapped up one piece of the puzzle – the industrial division of Northvolt Systems, one of its daughter companies.

Now, a second chunk of the business has found a buyer: a battery factory in Poland. The purchaser is Silicon Valley-based battery producer Lyten.

A "new chapter"

The acquisition forms part of Lyten's strategy to expand its lithium-sulphur battery production across Europe. The company has already acquired Northvolt's lithium-metal cell manufacturing facility in Silicon Valley.

"Northvolt's BESS manufacturing operations are truly world-class and represent a seamless strategic fit for Lyten as we launch an exciting new chapter for our company," said Dan Cook, Lyten's CEO and co-founder, in a statement. "We plan to restart operations in Poland immediately and deliver on both existing and new customer orders."

Lars Herlitz, Lyten's chairman and co-founder, added that customers are increasingly demanding energy storage systems manufactured in Europe using locally sourced supply chains, free from geopolitical risk.

"Gdansk, Poland, is the perfect location to meet this need for Europe," he commented.

The remainder of Northvolt remains on the market, with bankruptcy administrator Mikael Kubu telling Swedish local media yesterday that five potential buyers are currently in the frame.
