Daniel Uusitalo is scouting for Nordic energy tech startups. These 6 are on his radar.

Daniel Uusitalo, an analyst at Netherlands-based VC 4Impact Capital, is on the prowl for new investments.

One of the main corners of climate tech he’s looking at is energy software, which is capitalising on significant advancements in AI, cloud computing, and analytics to solve the unique problems of renewable energy systems.

“The sector is complex,” Uutisalo tells Impact Loop. “There’s software for forecasting, grid optimisation, ancillary services, demand response… even controlling capacity at the appliance level in homes. Every layer offers opportunity.”

Energy software startups are well positioned to benefit from the record funding being funnelled into AI. However, while “nearly every company” in the space now claims to use artificial intelligence, Uutisalo says they should focus on solutions where the technology actually adds value.

“For us, AI has to provide insights or optimisation that couldn’t otherwise be delivered,” he explains. “It’s about increasing transparency, understanding performance in real time, and avoiding waste – like spotting where CO2 emissions spike due to inefficiencies in operations.”

Uusitalo joined 4Impact Capital shortly after the close of its second €68m fund in November 2024. The SFDR Article 9 investment vehicle targets early-stage impact startups in north-western Europe – but Uusitalo’s focus is in the Nordics, where the Finn is from originally.

Uutisalo says the region's energy tech space in particular shows plenty of promise. “Even with past funding waves and high-profile exits, we haven’t seen a company that has truly captured the market. That means opportunities remain for startups who understand the system and can deliver real-world impact.”

Six startups on his radar:

ATO Energy (Sweden) – Stockholm‑based startup founded in 2022 building a software stack for renewable‑heavy industrial sites to monitor, control and optimise energy usage.

Versiro (Norway) – A Trondheim‑based outfit using AI to support power producers in multi‑market decision‑making – integrating asset data, weather and market scenarios to optimise trading and risk.

Qurrent (Sweden) – Offers a platform that connects batteries, solar parks and other resources through IoT‑gateways, pre‑qualifies them for flexibility markets and actively trades on their behalf to boost returns.

Rebase Energy (Sweden) – Provides data and digital tools to plan and optimise distributed energy resources including solar, wind, batteries, EV charging, and heat pumps.

Ogre AI (Romania/UK) – Delivers high‑granularity AI‑driven forecasts of renewable generation and demand (down to 5–15‑minute intervals), which purportedly help grid operators cut millions in costs.

Elvy Energy (Sweden) – Targets operators of renewables (wind/solar) with AI tools to automate operational efficiency and asset optimisation across the project lifecycle.
