UK pet food brand THE PACK and German/Portuguese biotech startup MicroHarvest have launched Gut Bites, the UK’s first dog treats made with microbial protein.
The protein is produced through fermentation, where tiny microbes convert sugar-rich agricultural byproducts into a bacteria-based powder. The oven-baked treats are designed for dogs with allergies, sensitive stomachs, or picky appetites.
MicroHarvest’s CEO Katelijne Bekers calls the launch a “major step” for the company, highlighting the potential to scale microbial protein in the UK’s £3.9b pet food market.
“We're showing that microbial protein isn’t just a sustainable solution, but one that dogs truly enjoy,” said Bekers.
Good for pet and planet?
A 2024 study at Wageningen University found that over three-quarters of UK and German dog owners would buy treats or full dog food made with microbial protein. Taste tests also showed that even picky dogs preferred MicroHarvest’s protein, eating 44% more than standard feed pellets, according to the company.
The product is also intended to lower the environmental impact of conventional pet food, which is directly tied to heavily emitting meat and fish industries. Microbial protein, which is made in the lab, is intended to generate far fewer emissions than traditional animal-based meat.
Humans snacks next?
While Microharvest sees pets as the first step, humans could be next on the microbial menu.
The company says the protein could be used in bars, shakes, ice cream, and other human foods, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional proteins while slashing land use and carbon emissions.
The company has already submitted a full dossier to the European Food Safety Authority seeking regulatory approval for human consumption, and remains confident of a positive outcome.
In the meantime, MicroHarvest is scaling through the pet market, which faces fewer regulatory hurdles and already promises a path to profitability.
Gut Bites are the latest milestone in MicroHarvest’s expansion following its 2024 launch in Germany with VEGDOG, the first European dog snack to feature microbial protein.
